Monday, November 10th, Islamorada Key

Monday was a weather repeat of yesterday – warm and a nice breeze!

Today is planned as Ti stuff in the morning and then head out in the afternoon to tour about.

With our work accomplished we started by visiting the “Theatre of the Sea.”  What a neat place, they show case Dolphins, Sea Lions and Parrots.  Included in this is a guided tour through their small park that also includes Large Sea Turtles, Grouper, Barracuda, Nurse Sharks, Alligator and Crocodile (I am glad it was not a petting Zoo) and many other underwater friends.  We started with a Sea Lion named Wilbur; this guy was quite the performer.  These animals go through many hours of positive reinforcement training to be able to perform the tricks they do, but Wilbur actually seemed to play off the crowd and we all had a very enjoyable time.

We then did the Guided Tour and then on to the parrot show.  They showed us Parrots and Macaws and the strength of their jaws while cracking Macadamia nuts, which require over 2500 pounds of force to crack the nut.  Many of these birds did it with no problem!!  They even had a bird that could add and subtract, the audience would shout out numbers and the trainer would show the bird the number of fingers of each number and either add or subtract.  The bird would actually do the math and ring his bell with the right answer – very cool!!

We finished our visit here with those loveable Dolphins; about 10 audience members were invited down for either a kiss or to pat the Dolphin.  Most took the kiss.  The usual jumping through hoops, and towing a trainer around the pool etc. followed this.

This is a fairly small establishment but they do a top-notch job.  We really enjoyed it and I would actually consider swimming with the Dolphins as part of the tour next time if we come back.

After this very enjoyable afternoon we were told about a wonderful little restaurant right on the water called Lazy Days.  What a view looking east into the Atlantic Ocean.  Even facing east the suns effect on the clouds was amazing; it was very reminiscent of the Caribbean Islands.  We stopped in for dinner and tried our very first Conch (pronounced “Conk”) as an appetizer.  It was grilled and tasted marvellous!!  Well we were on a role so we ordered our main course – not thinking how filling the Conch ended up being.  Diane had “Hog Fish” and I had grilled Shrimp and Scallops on pasta.  A little expensive but very good.  Well needless to say we brought allot home, oh well dinner tomorrow J.
View from our dinner table - very nice!!

We got home after dark and settled in for the evening.
