We left the Florida Keys thinking that we will definitely be
back. We had a great time there. We are off to Lake Wales to visit family
friends Les and Phyllis at the Saddlebag Resort in Lake Wales.
Lake Wales is a very pretty area of central Florida. Following our arrival and a day of catching up
and relaxation we visited a place called Bok Tower Gardens. It is a very unique tower built in the 1920’s
and then donated to the American people.
This contains 60 bronze cast bells with the heaviest bell weighing in at
over 60 tons!
| These Lilly Pads are about 4 to 5 feet across! |
To play the bells a person uses what is called a Carillon. My understanding is that it uses cables from
the “player” (similar to an organ) to the bell clappers (the bells are
stationary). The “carillonneur”
does not use his fingers but his hands to push down on the keys. The louder you want the sound, the harder you
push the keys. More information can be
found through this link: http://boktowergardens.org. There is also a wonderful garden to walk
about that is full of birds, trees, ponds (with giant lily pads), flowers, a
great gift shop and very nice little café – very good food!
We spent three lovely days visiting Les and Phyllis. It was great just to relax and talk.
